BEMIS Artists-in-Residence Alicia Reyes McNamara
BEMIS FALL 2019 ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
Alicia Reyes McNamara (Chicago, IL / London, England)
Alicia Reyes McNamara’s work deals with issues of displacement, particularly within a double diaspora. It aims to challenge incomplete identities constructed by two-dimensional ideas of Latinx culture, while it acknowledges the absurdity, and at times vulgarity, in the projected images found within the media’s exaggerated caricatures and telenovela kitsch. During her residency at Bemis, she is creating a surreal stop-motion animation that will investigate themes of futurism, sci-fi, and resilience of tradition.
Bemis Center facilitates the creation, presentation, and understanding of contemporary art through an international residency program, exhibitions, and educational programs.
